You'd be hard-pressed to find an industry that changes more drastically and more frequently than IT. What you may have been an expert in five years ago is now old-hat, replaced by some new application or storage solution that's taking the industry by storm. Making sure you have the right certifications under your belt goes hand-in-hand with making sure you're always up-to-date on industry trends and are making your skill sets as marketable as possible to potential employers.

Of course, with the industry changing as often as it does, it can be difficult to determine which certifications are worth spending your time pursuing and will effectively last the longest in making you look relevant. Luckily, there are a few that stand the test of time better than others. Here are two IT certifications that industry professionals should consider investing in for the greatest return value:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP): "[The value of a PMP certification comes] from demonstrated experience in the project management field. Before applying to take the certification exam, each project manager must prove extensive experience and education hours," writes Alex Espenson for Business 2 Community. "Another component that adds to the value of a PMP certification is the short renewal time frame of three years. Any PMP holder will need to earn an additional 60 Professional Development Units per three year renewal cycle. This ensures each PMP holder keeps current with the project management standards as they are updated."
  • VMware Certified Professional – Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCV): Recognized industry-wide as the original VMware certification, VCP-DCV is the best credential for IT professionals to pursue in order to demonstrate their capacity for installing, configuring and managing VMware vSphere platforms. Certification courses for VCP-DCV require an introductory course, standardized training and at least six months of experience in working with vSphere.
